Caixa Preta
(2024)
Caixa Preta (i.e. Black Box) is an audiovisual collective that aims to challenge the norms of the audiovisual industry by assembling specialized teams for each job, primarily composed of Black, LGBTQIAP+, and disabled individuals. The name “Black Box” has two distinct yet intertwined layers of meaning.
Firstly, it looks back to the roots of photography through the lens of the scientific experiment known as the camera obscura, which is fundamental to the essence of contemporary image capture. Secondly, on a deeper level, it nods to Vilém Flusser’s book, “The Philosophy of the Black Box,” written in 1983. This philosophical study deconstructs and envisions the future trajectory of photography, offering reflections on the medium’s evolution and its impact on society.
While Flusser refers to the “black box” as a complex and obscure system, the Caixa Preta collective, much like photography itself, seeks to reveal the world through its own “black box,” bringing to light marginalized perspectives and voices. It challenges traditional structures and promotes inclusion and diversity in a talent-saturated market dominated by white heteronormative individuals.
